Eskom Uganda Limited (EUL) is a private limited liability company established under the Laws of Uganda, with its head office located in Jinja, Uganda, and wholly owned by Eskom Enterprises Proprietary Limited of South Africa. As part of the privatisation process of the Uganda Power Sector, the Government offered a 20 year concession for the operation and maintenance of the Nalubaale and Kiira hydroelectric power stations. This concession is held by Eskom Uganda Limited. These power stations supply about 67% of the country's electrical energy and remain the assets of the Uganda Government in terms of the Concession Agreement.
ESKOM (U) Ltd is in the Electricity Industry. We operate and maintain Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations on behalf of the Government of Uganda. We understand there is a company by the name ESCOM which is the business of garbage collection in Kampala.
A growing economy, rise in population, and increased investments all put a high demand on electricity consumption which cannot be met from the present capacity. Load shedding is designed to distribute the available power to consumers by turning off one area and supplying another in an attempt to serve all the customers. However our generation is 24 hours daily and UMEME manages the distribution
This is a hydro power plant & uses water to run the turbines which produce electricity. However Eskom Uganda generates power while complying with the water permit and release limits set by Directorate of Water Development (DWD)
Construction of the dam commenced in 1950 and it was commissioned on 29th April 1954 by Her Majesty the Queen of England.
Nalubaale Power Station has 10 turbines each rated at 18MW while Kiira Power Station has five turbines each rated at 40MW, If it was not for other factors affecting generation, including the limitations on water flow from the lake, the total power generated from both stations would be 380MW.
Kiira Power Station was not built by ESKOM. The station was built by the Uganda Government in response to increased demand for electricity. ESKOM is only managing the station
ESKOM did not buy UEB. As part of the privatization process of the Uganda Power Sector, the Government offered a 20 year concession for the operation and maintenance of the Nalubaale and Kiira hydroelectric power stations. This concession is held by Eskom Uganda Limited. These power stations remain assets of the Uganda Government in terms of the Concession Agreement
